The African Union has formally installed Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye as its chairperson for 2026, handing him the rotating leadership at the bloc's 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, according to a report by Guardian Nigeria. Ndayishimiye takes over from Angola's Joao Lourenco at a summit the AU built around the theme of assuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems, framed as central to the bloc's Agenda 2063 development goals.

AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf told delegates that water access has to be treated as a shared public good essential to both development and peace across the continent, rather than a purely technical infrastructure issue. The two-day summit's focus on water and sanitation reflects growing concern among AU member states that shrinking water resources are increasingly tied to displacement, farmer-herder conflict and broader instability across multiple regions.

For Nigeria, the summit's emphasis carries direct relevance at home. Government officials said the focus on water security lines up closely with Nigeria's own struggles over potable water access, environmental degradation and persistent farmer-herder tensions, and Abuja has continued pushing for stronger continental coordination on infrastructure and climate resilience as the AU moves to translate the summit's priorities into concrete programs under Ndayishimiye's chairmanship.
