Tributes are pouring in across Nigeria following the death of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the long-serving National Leader of Afenifere, who died on Tuesday at his country home in Akure, Ondo State, at the age of 100, according to a report by Guardian Nigeria. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo described his passing as a huge loss for the country, saying Nigeria has lost a true leader and an enduring symbol of its democratic journey.

Tunji-Ojo said Fasoranti's century of life was anchored in selfless service and stood as a testament to principled leadership, recalling him as a lifelong disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo who spent decades as a leading voice within Afenifere. Throughout that time, Fasoranti was known for pressing consistently for true federalism and the dignity of the Yoruba people, while still positioning himself as a steady advocate for national unity rather than narrow regional interest.

Tunji-Ojo also pointed to a gathering held in Lagos only recently to mark Fasoranti's centenary, calling it a rare honour that reflected the depth of respect he commanded across generations and political lines. Other Nigerian political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, have separately issued their own tributes, with Tinubu describing Fasoranti as a pillar of the country's democracy.
